“There had been a bit of talk of cancelling it after what’s happened (terror attacks in Manchester and London), but after a lot of deliberation we’ve decided to go ahead with it,” said co-organiser cllr Pat Dillon.

“I’m waiting for Katy Bourne, the police and crime commissioner, to come back to me to make sure we have enough police presence on the day. Bearing in mind the situation with the country we’re going to be as vigilant as we can without letting it interfere with the day.”

Sunday, June 18 will see the welcome return of Armed Forces Day after the annual event was cancelled last year.

The day before there will be music and entertainment outside the Regis Centre as a preview to the main event.

The day itself begins at 9.50am with a parade of service and ex-service personnel followed by a drumhead service opposite the pier.

Other events include a presentation of medals to veterans, military displays and music by the Chichester City Band.

Cllr Dillon added: “I’m really looking forward to it. There’s a lot of ex-servicemen in the town so it’s a very important event.”
