Airport's new owner sets out plans for future

Controversial plans to expand runways at Shoreham Airport will not feature in proposals outlined by preferred bidder Erinaceous plc.

The company, which was one of 437 bidders is expected to be chosen by airport owners Worthing and Brighton and Hove councils as their private partner this month.

If plans are approved the airport could be transferred as early as April 2006 on a 150-year lease.

It has promised to regenerate the area, develop aviation and preserve existing employment. Other proposals include developing a transport hub with a park and ride scheme and encouraging new commercial and businesses developments south of the runway to generate jobs.

Aviation plans could include running commercial flights to UK and European destinations such as Edinburgh, Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin. In addition a visitor centre, aviation academy, business park, leisure services and mixed commercial facilities south of the site would be built.

Erinaceous would complete a five-year improvement programme of existing facilities before embarking on new developments.
