A NEW drama studio at a West Sussex school was opened by actress Julie Walters, who lives locally, on Friday last week. She joined staff and students at The Weald School in Billingshurst to officially open the new facilities on Friday September 16.
The two new purpose-built drama rooms - which include an office, store and cloakroom - are situated in the former youth wing as part of refurbishments that took place over summer.
The new drama rooms have been named ‘The Julie Walters Theatre’ and ‘The Tin Pan Studio’.
Headteacher Peter Woodman said: “It was wonderful to welcome Julie to our school and have her open the theatre that we have named in her honour.
“She is great fun and was a real pleasure to have her with us for the opening. She was keen to spend time with our students and responded to repeated requests for photographs with different groups of students. Nothing was too much trouble.
“I wanted to reassure her that even though the theatre is named after her, we were not expecting repeated visits, although she quipped that she might want to come back!”
Parents will have an opportunity to look round the school during the open evening on Thursday September 29 from 6.00pm to 8.30pm.
