Sun shone for the Queen's visit in 1984

These pictures show Her Majesty chatting to the crowd at the South of England Show and smiling for the cameras from the back of a Range Rover.

The pictures were published in the Mid Sussex Times in 1984, and the report stated there was a record-breaking turnout for the four-day event, with more than 103,000 people showing up.

The rain had bucketed down on the first day, meaning numbers were low, but, as if by Royal decree, the sun shone for the Queen’s visit.

She certainly got one over on the Duke of Edinburgh. His visit in 1978 only attracted 100,000 people – though surely claiming bragging rights was not something in which she indulged!

The Queen was received at the showground by Lavinia, Duchess of

Norfolk, and greeted in the main arena by Christopher Hall, vice-chairman of the society.

Her escorts during her visit included Lord and Lady Selborne, Mr Green and Reg Hughes, secretary of the society.
