Can you solve the mystery of the Ardingly Scouts?

According to a note scribbled on the back, it shows the boys of the Ardingly College Scouts at Ardingly Station.

The problem is, it’s dated July 1896.

While it may look the part, the Scouting movement wasn’t founded until 1907, so something has definitely gone awry, probably in the labelling of the photo.
