Dr Tara Quinn-Cirillo, of Horsham Psychology, started #compassionateHorsham in a bid to encourage people in the area to behave more kindly towards each other.

She said: “I am keen to keep the emotional wellbeing and mental health of the community on the forefront of people’s minds.

“Getting Horsham back to the Horsham we know and what we value, a community that respects each other.”

The fatigue of weeks of lockdown can cause people to be tempted to speak harshly, Tara said.

She added: “As human beings our empathy can have limits.

“The effect of ongoing dissonance in respect to how we emerge from lockdown and the behaviour that can result from this dissonance can impact on people’s emotional wellbeing and mental health.”

Tara said it’s important to remember people may not be aware of what others are experiencing.

She added: “We are all facing the changes in respect to lockdown easing. It is a difficult time to navigate and it is portent that we are supportive and compassionate towards everyone navigating the new normal.

“Rather than diving in with responses and behaviour that is unkind or divisive, we need to pause and consider what is that teacher, business owner, walker, delivery driver or shop worker going through or been through?

“It can be helpful to think how would you treat a friend in this situation, what tone would you use? What would they want to hear right now?”

Tara is urging people to #compassionateHorsham on social media sharing acts of kindness, resilience and connection.
