Worthing College, which had been told to improve in every Ofsted report since 2011, underwent a four-day inspection by a team of seven inspectors in February.

Their findings, which were published on April 13, saw the college rated ‘good’ in all areas, much to the delight of principal Peter Corrigan and his team.

Mr Corrigan said he was “extremely proud and pleased” with the outcome of the inspection and added: “The report is a great testimony to our hard working, respectful, well behaved and very talented students.”

In his report, lead inspector Richard Beaumont said: “Following three consecutive inspections at which the college was judged to be less than good, leaders and managers have shown determination to bring about improvement, and a shift towards a culture of high expectations is discernible.”

Mr Beaumont recognised the quality of teaching and learning at Worthing had improved so much, the vast majority of students now achieved their qualifications, and a large majority made good progress.

He noted that teachers who had performed “poorly” in the past had either improved or left the college.

Mr Corrigan praised the “skill, dedication, hard work and sheer professionalism” of his staff and added: “Students benefit from very good teaching and support throughout their time at college.

“The fantastic experience students enjoy is a direct result of the determination of staff to support their success.

“The college will now focus on continuous improvement and our vision to become an outstanding college.”

Mr Beaumont listed three issues the college needed to further improve if it wished to attain that ‘outstanding’ rating.

They included ensuring all A-level students made the progress and achieved the grades of which they were capable; and ensuring the work to develop students’ progress in English and maths resulted in more doing well in their GCSEs.

Sir Peter Bottomley MP contacted Mr Corrigan and his team to offer his congratulations.

He said: “Every visitor to Worthing College notices the sense of purpose. It is good that Ofsted agree. There is an ordered atmosphere with the expectation of doing well at every level.”
