Headteacher's delight over '˜well deserved' Ofsted rating

Tangmere Primary Academy, in Chichester – which is part of The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT) family – had been told to improve in 2014 but, following a two-day inspection in April, its rating was raised to ‘good’.

In her report, published on May 17, inspector Amanda Gard described headteacher Paul Turney as “determined” and his leadership team as “strong and dedicated”, setting high expectations for pupils and staff.

She said: “The strong leadership team has taken positive action to improve the quality of teaching.

“As a result, standards in reading, writing and mathematics are rapidly improving.”

Ms Gard praised the behaviour of the pupils and their attitude to learning, saying most were determined to do well.

She added: “The encouraging atmosphere in the school means pupils are confident to take risks or make mistakes in order to try out their ideas and make good progress.”

Mr Turney said he felt Tangmere Primary had “moved forward” since its last inspection.

He added: “I believe that the validation from Ofsted is fantastic and well deserved with plans already in place, as we continue to improve in all areas and build upon the successes of the past couple of years.

“The extremely pleasing part of the report for me was the sense that the school moving to ‘good’ was a real team effort as it really has been the hard work and dedication of my incredible staff, the desire of the children to do well, the support of the parents and the working partnerships that we have with our governors and TKAT, our academy sponsors, that have led to us achieving great results.

“Our children deserve to come to, our staff deserve to work in, our parents deserve to send their children to, the community deserves to have and our governors and TKAT deserve to be working with a school that is at least good – I am very proud to be able to say that this is now the case!”

Among the points raised by Ms Gard for further improvement were the need to: develop systems to track pupils’ achievement; increase the proportion of pupils who attended school regularly; and ensure the curriculum gave more opportunities to extend pupils’ understanding of a wide range of cultures.
