GCSEs: Steyning Grammar pupils give school ‘best ever’ results

The success is made even more special as head teacher Chris Taylor is leaving before the new school year, and the school celebrates its 400th birthday in 2014.

Pupils received their results this morning (Thursday August 22) with 72 per cent achieving five A*-C grades including English and Maths - a 12 per cent increase on last year.

Mr Taylor said: “We are delighted with these fantastic results which are the best ever in our school’s long history.

“This has been achieved not only through the dedication and hard work of our students and the support of their parents, but also through the concerted effort and commitment of our teaching staff. I thank them all.”

In a statement, the school highlighted the achievements of a large number of successful students, including Rebecca Van Pelt, who ‘achieved 12.5 GCSEs at A*’.

The statement also congratulates Ruth Allam and Isabel Green who ‘both achieved 11.5 GCSEs at A*’.

Mr Taylor, who is departing the school due to ill health, said he was ‘proud’ of the school’s ethos.

He added: ‘Whilst I am extremely sad to be leaving the school, these results send me on my way with a spring in my step.

“Knowing that the school culture is one that embraces change and focuses on great learning makes me proud. This is reflected in these great results.

“I pass on my very best wishes to all associated with the school.”
