Youth theatre launches at Pulborough

A new youth theatre is launching at Pulborough village hall for youngsters aged six-18, with a view to staging two productions a year.

Focusing on drama and singing, the new venture is being fronted by professional actors Mitch Jenkins and Laura Jeffery. Between them they have over 30 years’ experience in teaching and performing.

Mitch has directed performers including Rula Lenska and worked for all the major television channels. He has also appeared in the West End. Laura has just finished the international Abbamania tour, and they are both excited to be starting Pulborough Youth Theatre.

“I lived here in Pulborough as a teenager,” Mitch explains. “There was nothing for any of us to do unless we travelled into the bigger towns. This is why we are bringing this company here, to a great rural town that has so much yet has been crying out for something like this for the youngsters aged six-18.

“There will be two productions a year, one in July, and one in December. It will be a panto in December.”

As for this July’s production, it’s too early to say: “I don’t know what youngsters we have got yet. It is possible that it could be Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, but really we need to see the kids first to work the show around them, rather than force something on them.”

As for the venue, again it remains to be seen: “Hopefully we will find a small theatre space somewhere to give them the opportunity to experience being on stage - somewhere in the Pulborough area.”
