“Several of the works have been cleaned, reframed and all feature new interpretation. This exhibition follows our hugely-successful Mr. Turner show and further echoes Constable’s description of Petworth as ‘that house of art’.

“A notable inclusion is the famous 16th-century full-length portrait of Henry VIII from the studio of Hans Holbein. Usually displayed high in the panelling of Petworth’s Carved Room, it returns from its celebrated inclusion in the Real Tudors exhibition (National Portrait Gallery and Paris Museums) to be hung at a height to enthral visitors and enable close sight of its fine detail.

“Remastered additionally includes previously unexhibited works of international importance from the private rooms of Petworth House. These include Andrea del Sarto’s Madonna and Child with Saint John and Paris Bordone’s Portrait of a young woman. These works were not accepted by HM Government in the 1950s, when a portion of Petworth’s art collection became the first to be given in lieu of inheritance tax. They are now considered worthy of inclusion within a national collection.

“These extraordinary paintings will be displayed alongside exciting and rarely seen contextual treasures from Petworth, including a first edition of Shakespeare and his contemporary Thomas Harriot’s drawings of the moon’s surface, which pre-date those of Galileo and are the earliest in existence.

“In addition to our modern exhibition gallery, visitors can enjoy three historic state rooms within Petworth House. These will be rehung and re-lit to offer a refreshingly new experience of the famous mansion, and a valuable opportunity to explore the great collectors behind the ‘house of art’ and their outstanding acquisitions of 17th and 18th century masterpieces by Teniers, van Dyck, Claude, Bellotto and many others.”
