Songs ancient and modern at Horsham

A FINE balance of traditional folksongs and modern classical works will feature in the Spring concert being staged at Horsham’s Unitarian Church on Friday April 27. Appropriately titled CLASSICAL FOLK, the varied programme ranges from popular melodies and celebrated parlour songs to lyrical works by Paganini, Roselli, Massenet and Schubert.

The concert is the latest in what has become an established annual Horsham musical event, featuring local musicians and singers Sylvia and Peter Golden who joined forces some years ago with noted classical violinist Andrew Wickens who has travelled the world as a player with London’s Philharmonia Orchestra.

The concert is being held in aid of the charity Ashraya Nepal, a charity providing homes, shelter and education to underprivileged Nepalese children, particularly girls, orphans and those excluded because of lower caste. In that country in desperate need of education, and where many are denied what little there is, teaching beyond primary stage is almost non-existent outside the few main towns.

Admission, including post-performance wine and canapés, is free-of-charge but there will be a voluntary collection on behalf of Ashraya Nepal after the show. Venue is the Unitarian Church and hall (opposite Horsham bus station) and the programme begins at 7.30pm. Doors open at 7pm and those wishing to attend are recommended to arrive not later than 7.15pm as seating is limited to not more than 90 approx and this event has, in the past, been over-subscribed.
