Crawley Concordia Singers’ autumn concert on Saturday, November 14, will take the audience on a musical journey from the Charleston via Cheltenham to New York.

The theme for the evening is anniversaries – an anniversary associated with the work, the composer or sometimes both.

The evening opens with Bob Chilcott’s ‘A Little Jazz Mass’, which has quickly become a staple of choral music repertoire.

This will be followed by a substantial medley of music from George Gershwin’s ‘folk opera’ Porgy and Bess, John Rutter’s Birthday Madrigals, and a beautifully constructed medley from West Side Story.

The concert takes place at St Alban’s Church, Gossops Green, Crawley. It starts at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £12, are available on the door or in advance on 07790 863229.

Concordia Singers’ musical director Ian Assersohn said: “To accompany us I’m delighted that we are joined by a trio of musicians who will help us bring these jazzy works to musical life. The jazz trio combination of piano, drums and double bass goes very well with the sounds of choral singing.

“I hope the audience will enjoy the feast of melody and foot-tapping rhythms as much as we have enjoyed preparing it.”

Concordia Singers have been part of Crawley’s musical heritage for more than half a century.

Rehearsals take place every Thursday evening at 7.45pm at Crawley URC, Worth Park Avenue, Pound Hill, RH10 3DF.

Choir publicity officer Donna Oxley said new members were always welcome. “If you enjoy singing, why not come along and try it out for yourself? There is no audition and you won’t be tested in any way. Our rehearsals have a friendly, informal atmosphere and the concerts are always great fun.”
