Gifts galore at artists’trail in Hurst Festival

From stained glass to watercolours - artists are opening their studios to the public as part of the ninth Hurstpierpoint Festival.

The artists’ trail provides an opportunity to buy a range of unique gifts from paintings to jewellery and runs from 10am to 5pm on three days between Friday, September 20 and Sunday, September 22.

Hurstpierpoint Festival explodes into action this Saturday, with singers, dancers, clowns, jugglers and a host of other entertainers in the High Street (See our entertainments section for more details on the festival).

The artist’s trail is a highlight of the programme, offering a huge variety of contemporary and traditional art in a range of mediums by both established and up-and-coming artists.

This year, 26 artists will be displaying their work at 18 venues throughout the village.

There will be works in oil, watercolour, acrylic and pastels. Also displayed will be gouache and mixed media as well as etchings, lithography, photography, and limited edition prints.

Stained glass, handmade glass beads, silver and other jewellery, textiles and sculpture will also be exhibited.

One of the organisers, Sylvia Thornhill, said: “If you choose an artwork that really speaks to you it will repay its worth many times over.”

Sylvia is a celebrity in the village for winning a competition to design a sculpture on the village green to celebrate 700 years of St Lawrence Fair.

Refreshments will be offered at some of the venues and Sylvia, who lives in Pitt Lane, will be dishing up bacon rolls, soup and mouth-watering cakes, with help from a band of volunteers.

Money from her refreshments will go to the local branch of West Sussex Association for Disabled People.

Other highlights of Hurstpierpoint festival, which runs until September 28, include a scarecrow competition this Saturday at the Albourne Road allotments and a concert by the Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus in Holy Trinity Church on September 28.
