George Harrison’s musical legacy celebrated in Felpham

All Things Must Pass, a celebration of the genius of George Harrison, were one of the highlights of this year’s Festival of Chichester.

They are back in the area for a date at Felpham village hall on November 21.

Group founder and singer Alex Eberhard was delighted with the Chichester date and with the date that followed immediately afterwards, one in Henley where Harrison lived for many years before his death in 2001.

They were joined on stage by Sam Brown, daughter of Joe Brown, playing a ukulele which had been given to her by her father and which had been given to Joe by his great mate Harrison himself.

It all added up to a great night and a landmark gig for the band: “Henley was a huge success. It was a great atmosphere. We really enjoyed it. We had a full house. It was totally sold out with a waiting list for tickets, and we had a standing ovation for both sets, which was great.

“And then after the second set, the chairman of the theatre came to me to spontaneously offer that we keep our equipment on the stage and play another show the next evening.”

They had other commitments, so they didn’t; plus Alex wonders where a second audience would have come from.

But as he says, it was a lovely offer to have, to cap a great night in a town of great Harrison significance.

The band has been going for three years now, and their star continues to rise: “I think it is because there is nothing like it. There are dozens of Beatles bands that dress up in Sgt Pepper’s costumes, but having a ten-piece band that doesn’t want to be a tribute but instead wants to celebrate a great musician is something very different. The spirit of the band comes across well. People sense that we genuinely love the music.

“It comes to me as a surprise how many George Harrison fans there are out there, knowing the songs and even some of the obscure ones, but The Beatles are still a huge part of people’s lives generally.”

And it’s that emotional response which takes it to the next level, the way people will tell the band just why the songs mean so much to them.

For fans of the band, the great news is there is still plenty more material Alex is keen to explore.

“There are a number of George Harrison’s Beatles songs I want to do, things like Old Brown Shoe and I Me Mine and Think for Yourself, and there are lots of songs from the 70s and 80s I would be interested to do.

“Ultimately we would like to tour the whole country on the theatre circuit, and we would like to try abroad. We are getting lovely messages from abroad, from Belgium, from the States, but it would be quite something taking a ten-piece band on a journey like that! But with a bit of luck, we might find the right person to talk to.”

Tickets www.allthingsmustpass.co.uk or on the night. Doors open at 7:30pm. The band starts at 8pm.
