Classical favourites will be complimented by Howard Goodall’s arrangement of Psalm 23, ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’ - now instantly recognisable as the theme tune to the hit comedy series The Vicar of Dibley.

Howard’s intention in writing the theme had always been to write a piece of church music, which could have a life of its own beyond the series and this has certainly been fulfilled.

The programme also ranges from Mozart’s ‘Ave Verum Corpus’, to J.S. Bach’s ‘Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring’ and Schubert’s Mass in G.

One of musical director Ian Assersohn’s own compositions, ‘Dwell on the Beauty’, also features.

Rehearsals start at Crawley URC, Worth Park Avenue, Pound Hill, on Thursday, January 7, at 7.45pm, and continue every Thursday evening from then on.

The concert will take place at St Alban’s Church, Gossops Drive, on Saturday, March 12, at 7.30pm.

Choir publicity officer Donna Oxley said new voices would be welcome at rehearsals and new members would be sure to enjoy the combination of classics, old and new.

“Mozart was an exceptional innovator and we’re sure he would have enjoyed a concert where his work was performed along with the Vicar of Dibley,” said Donna.

“If you enjoy singing, why not come along and try it out for yourself? There is no audition and you won’t be tested in any way. Our rehearsals have a friendly, informal atmosphere and the concerts are always great fun.”
