Club hope £½M schemewill boost membership

This week’s heavy snow cannot disguise the fact that summer is just around the corner and especially looking forward to that are members of the Weald tennis and squash club at Hassocks.

Work costing a little in excess of £500,000 is currently being done which will provide four new artificial clay tennis courts, redevelop the clubhouse and put a new roof on the squash club.

Club chairman Adrian Rutherford said: “We’ve financed the work from the sale of some land and hope it will be completed by the end of May, in time for a grand opening in June.

“It will give us up to 11 hard courts now that we’ve got rid of the grass courts, which are more difficult to maintain.

“We have a particularly vibrant junior tennis section and an older section also draws 30 regulars playing in the mornings.

“Currently we have 450 members but want to expand that base, particularly in the squash section.

“We’re the only squash club locally not based at a leisure centre.”

Work on the tennis courts started last October and then the clubhouse redevelopment began just before Christmas.

Situated beneath the South Downs, and close to Hassocks station, the club have four squash courts, all with a viewing gallery, and three resident tennis coaches.

The club pride themselves on offering tennis to all standards, from their rusty rackets section through to top league action.
