STUDENTS of Steyning will find treasures indeed on the West Sussex Past Pictures website centred on Worthing Library.
It is home to irresistible images of a Steyning still recognisable, but very much a Steyning from a lost era.

One such picture shows an AA motorbike patrolman in Mouse Lane, Steyning. The thought of such a chap rushing to your emergency these days would be laughable, but presuambly in 1925 he was equipped to cope with your every need.

Also in the photograph is the timber-framed15th century building used as workhouse from 1729 to 1835, later divided into two cottages. The signpost informs you of the relative distances - "Horsham 13 1/2 M, Pulborough 11".
