THE winter of 1881 was a devilishly harsh one – as a glorious image of Chichester's Eastgate Square shows.
It's one of a number of Christmassy images West Sussex County Council has brought together as a special festive web film alongside other picture postcard memories of West Sussex from the late 1800s.

Viewable on www.westsussex.gov.uk, it features snow scenes from around the county, people skating, children at a Christmas party, and even Post Office workers sorting the mail.

The party is at the Children's Heart Hospital in Lancing in about 1950; the postmen are in Bognor Regis in December 1908; and the frozen pond is Homefield Park, Worthing in 1894.
