Roads bosses evict 'spider' sculptures

A SOLITARY complaint that Arundel Festival sculptures on the A27 Causeway roundabout outside the town could frighten children and distract drivers has led to the Highways Agency ordering their removal.
The spider-like sculptures, known as The Curious Scuttle-Heads, are the work of Worthing sculptor Stuart Slade (34), a mature fine-art student at Northbrook College.
They had been commissioned by the Arundel Gallery Trail as this year's start point for the festival trail, following a custom established more than a decade ago.
The roundabout sculptures are intended to give emerging artists exposure and draw attention to the festival events taking place.
Festival organisers were said to be 'quietly furious' about the action.
Organisers of the Gallery Trail followed the same procedures as in previous years and applied to the Inter Route department, agent for the Highways Agency, for permission, which was granted.
