Inspired by flowers...

A photograph of Mothering Sunday flowers from many years ago was the inspiration for a charming new book from Arundel's Sandra Saer.

“The original idea goes back to all these mounds of photographs that you collect as you get older, and as you get older the mounds get higher. My mound is now very, very high! And I kept thinking to myself ‘Sort them out! Sort them out!’

“And I was going through old photographs of where I used to live in Watersfield, which is still very much where my heart is. I have lived in Arundel for six and a half years, and I love it here, but it is not my lovely Peartree Cottage.

“But going through these photographs, I came across a lovely photograph which I have used on the cover, of two vases of flowers that had been sent to me by two of my sons for Mothering Sunday. The photo was taken with an old-fashioned camera, and I think in some ways photographs from old-fashioned cameras keep better than they do now. But I was thinking ‘flowers in the window’, and I thought that that would be a jolly good title for a book.

“So I did a little piece for my local church in Arundel. I invited people at St Nicholas Church to let me have short pieces about life-enhancing thoughts and memories that they would like to share with other people. It was very slow to start with but gradually I got some really lovely pieces, some of them really extraordinary pieces from people I would never have expected to write. Some of them are poetry. Some of them are prose. Some of them have illustrations. It has just turned into such a lovely little book.

“The book is very me. I am very much a communicator, and this is a way of people communicating within the pages of the book. It’s about sharing, and I am a great one for sharing. I believe that the whole business of communication is threatened by mobile phones and all the rest of it. Really just to be able to go out into the street and say hello to somebody is so special.

“The book is not a book about Arundel people, but a book by people in Arundel and with connections to the church that have contributed to the book, Arundel church-goers.”

Among the contributors are Shirley Robertson, Bill Beere, Suzanne Weaver and Alison Miller.

To mark the publication, and with spring approaching, Sandra is inviting people to send her their poems of spring. Email her on [email protected].
