Vibrant colours, energetic cast, toe tapping tunes made this staging of Lord Loyd Webber’s oldest musical an awesome afternoon at the theatre.

The melodies written in 1968 didn’t feel outdated with so many different musical styles showcased during the two hour show in a way that seemed fresh and fun.

My six-year-old companion was amazed that there was no talking but constant singing throughout. We particularly enjoyed the brothers country rendition of One More Angel in Heaven and the fun feel to Benjamin Calypso.

The well known songs had people around us humming and sometimes even singing along, but no one minded as there was such a fell good atmosphere.

We attended the matinee and did not see Joe McElderry but we were not disappointed by the fantastic performance by understudy Tom Hier, especially his moving rendition of Close Every Door.

The show moves along with the help of the Narrator (Lucy Kay) and she was great in this role and really seemed to enjoy belting out some of the songs as did Emilianos Stamatakis playing the Elvis-inspired Pharaoh and seemed to be having such fun gyrating through the Song of the King and King of My Heart.

On stage throughout the entire performance were the delightful Joseph Choir, made up from local children who are part of Sway Perform which meets at the Hawth. They didn’t miss a harmony or dance move.
