Steyning memorial football match's charity goal
A MEMORIAL football match held at Steyning Town Football Club's Shooting Field ground raised around £1,100 for charity.
More than 70 people watched the Sunday (June 1) match, held in memory of Ivan Mitchell, who lost his battle with cancer in July, aged 31.
The second annual match saw Bailey's Braves, led by Steyning man Matt Bailey, avenge their defeat last year by Evans' Eleven, led by Neil Evans – both former colleagues of Ivan's.
Evans' Eleven took an early lead, but Bailey's Braves fought back to lead 3-1 at half-time.
They scored an early brace in the second half to make the game safe, before Evans' Eleven grabbed a consolation goal to make the final score 5-2.
A raffle was held in the club house after the match, with more than 20 prizes donated by businesses across Steyning, Worthing and the county.
Money raised will be split equally between charity Macmillan Cancer Support and St Barnabas House hospice, Worthing.
Matt told the Herald: "The day was a great success and on behalf of myself and Neil, we would like to thank all the businesses who donated prizes on the day.
"We would also like to thank Steyning Town Football Club for the use of the facilities, and also to Frank Bartram, who once again did an excellent job of refereeing the game."
