THE third Southdown Charity Chase has been declared a runaway success, with more than £2,000 expected to have been raised.
Olympic gold medalist Sally Gunnell again kicked-off the annual event, which saw a series of races combined with a family fun day at
Steyning's Memorial Playing Field, on Sunday May 18.

Proceeds go towards the Southdown Nursery, in Jarvis Lane, Steyning, which is a registered charity, and Clare Robinson, chairman of the trustees, said the day had been a hit with runners and families alike.

"It went really well and conditions were perfect for runners, with plenty of sunshine and a cooling breeze," she said.

This year's main race – which featured a different course to the last two years – saw 79 entries, with five in the under 15 race and more than 40 in both the under eight and under 11 races.

Clare said: "Most commented that the 4.2 mile course for the main race was tough but fair, and the sprint finish was exceptionally close, with
Simon James almost snatching victory from the long-time leader and eventual winner, Alan Tribe, who finished in 26 minutes and 37 seconds."

Early figures suggest funds raise will exceed £2,000, with some personal sponsorship money still to come in.

Clare added: "The most enjoyment – and therefore money raised – seemed to come from the bouncy castles and the barbecue, which was expertly run by Emma Rogers.

"We think the event will continue to grow as there was a lot of family involvement on the day, even though perhaps more parents need to be pursuaded to run.

"The trustees of Southdown Nursery would, as always, like to thank the organisers and everyone who helped make it such a fun, family event."
