A jam-packed week of sporting action, involved the sporting teams of Harlands Primary School experiencing three near misses before finally emerging as champions.

Over three consecutive days, the school’s cricket teams took part in three different Sussex Kwik cricket finals at the Sussex Academy ground in Blackstone, losing narrowing on each occasion.

On Monday, 23rd June, the girls team performed extremely well to defeat Little Common School (Hastings), Ocklynge (Eastbourne) and Birchwood Grove (Burgess Hill) before ultimately finishing runners-up to North Lancing in an extremely close final.

A day later, the boys team also put in a great effort to progress to the county final following wins over Woodingdean (Brighton and Hove), St Andrew’s, Holbrook School (Horsham) and St Peter’s (Henfield). The final was a very close affair with Harlands losing out to Birchwood Grove by just four runs. This meant for the second day running, the school’s children missed out on a trip to the National Kwik cricket finals by the smallest of margins.

The following day saw the school’s Year 4/5 cricket again lose out in a final against Birchwood Grove.

However, after three days of disappointment the school’s outdoor athletics team finally managed to emerge victorious at the Haywards Heath Primary Schools Athletics event, which was held at Oathall Community College.

Exceptional performances from pupils from across a range of year groups meant that the Harlands recorded a winning margin of 44 points over second placed school St Wilfrid’s. Lindfield School finished third and Blackthorns School fourth. Other schools taking part in the event were Northlands Wood, Bolnore Village, Holy Trinity (Cuckfield), Warden Park Primary Academy and St Joseph’s.

The school’s sporting focus now moves to the Sussex School Games on the 10th July, when the Harlands gymnastics and athletics teams will represent Mid-Sussex at K2, Crawley, in the county finals of the respective disciplines.
