Jones also returned from this year’s tournament with one more trophy than in 2015 after partnering fellow Brit Luz Esperanza Merry to the women’s doubles crown, as players on the Tennis Foundation’s Wheelchair Tennis World Class Programme left Sheffield with three titles in total.

Jones was among an all-British line-up in the top half of the women’s singles draw, earning successive 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1 wins over Debbie Brazier and Val Fisher, respectively, to see the top seed ease into this year’s final. After a straight sets win over Merry in the semi-finals 12 months ago Jones needed three sets this time, but held on to prevail 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

“I’m very happy to get my first titles of 2016 under my belt. Esperanza played really well in the final and the pressure was all on me as defending champion. Winning the ninth game to go 5-4 up in the third was crucial and I was really pleased to see the mental side of my game come through,” said Jones, who also paired up with Merry to reach the women’s doubles final for the loss of just two games before they raced through the final against Fisher and Caroline Macdonald 6-1, 6-1.

The reigning national champion’s latest successes come at the end of a month in which she has built momentum at a series of tournaments in Europe.

Jones reached her first final of 2016 in the women’s doubles at the ITF 3 Alpi del Mare tournament in Italy before arriving in Sheffield on the back of reaching the women’s singles semi-finals at the ITF 3 Open Sarreguemines in France.
