Crawley’s new European title winner Ben Jones could one day become World champion.

That is the opinion of one-time contender Ross Minter, the son of Crawley’s former undisputed World middleweight champion Alan.

Former WBU World welterweight title challenger Ross ‘The Boss’ watched Jones take apart Scotland’s Kris Hughes for the WBO superfeatherweight European belt at a packed K2 on Saturday.

He reckons Jones can make the step up to world level if he continues to build his career and not try to rush in to the big time, like he did.

Minter said: “I’m very pleased for him. He’s done a terrific job on him and has got a good style behind him. Ben comes across really well and has put in the hard work.

“As you step up the ladder, the gaps in standard are larger. It would be fantastic if he can get a British title, the main European title (EBU).

“He can now fight for a version of the World title but more experience is needed.

“I think if he’s managed right he can win a bigger title, within a year.

“He could do with a good defence of the title against a good opponent. I think he can gradually bridge the gap.

“In time he can win a version of the World title.”

Jones, 30, would love to try his luck training in the USA to see what opportunities might come his way.

And a crack at a crown Stateside appeals to the former Thomas Bennett Community College pupil - who is aiming high, even if it is tongue in cheek.

He said: “I can hold my head up high for what I’ve achieved. There have been some big goals over the years and I’m really happy.

“It would be nice to go out with a big pay day. It would be great to fight Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas!

“It’s all about timing, options and taking the right one. After taking a break I will settle down and see what options come up and will discus them with Mick (Alldis, his manager).

Meanwhile Jones is looking for sponsorship to allow him and his team to travel to train in the USA.

He said: “The cost of the flight tickets would be a good sponsorship - we could publicise a sponsor with Sky TV coverage.” Anyone interested in helping Ben should phone him on 07720045566 or contact him on facebook.

Ross Minter is promoting a Queensbury Boxing League show at the Effingham Park Hotel in Copthorne this Saturday, starting at 6pm featuring Crawley boxer Ian Maguire and James Ward from Horley. Tickets priced £35/45 are available from 07547022244
