Horsham fencer Jamie Briggs finished 2012 as the top ranked under-nine in the country.

Jamie, a member of Crawley Sword Club, ended the year ranked first of more than 70 young fencers nationwide, after some stunning displays of skill gaining two gold medals, two silver, and two bronze throughout the year as well as other impressive results.

This has been Jamie’s first year of competitions, and the Leon Paul Junior Series event in Wales was a personal highlight.

He said: “I think I enjoyed the one in Cardiff the most, as I wasn’t expecting to win and I did, but they were all great fun.”

Jamie now moves up to the under-11s this season which will mean learning to use a longer sword, as well as encountering different fencers. He trains twice a week at Crawley Sword Club at K2.
