The Weald School struck gold at the Sussex Schools Winter Games last week, with a win in the year-eight boys rugby sevens competition.
Representing the Central region, which included schools such as Billingshurst Primary and Wisborough Green Primary,the Billingshurst-based school’s gold medal helped achieve an overall seventh place with 18 points.
The Weald beat Uckfield Community Technology College in the finals of what had been billed as a mini Olympic and Paralympic Games held at Lancing last week.
Team GB Olympic bronze medal winning hockey star Alex Danson was on hand to inspire the competitors and hand out medals, while Sadie Mason, chief executive of event organisers Active Sussex, reiterated the desire to create an Olympic legacy in the county.
The Winter Finals is an annual seasonal competition focusing on team sport. It features just four disciplines – football, hockey, netball and rugby sevens – with 400 competitiors from the best teams drawn from Sussex schools competing for regional and individual honours. Mason said: “The Winter Games was a fantastic chance for Sussex schools to come together for a day of team sport. A number of outstanding performers were talent spotted.”
