St Francis started the New Year with a 20-7 defeat in the Sussex Silver Salver cup match against league highflyers Midhurst who are second placed in the division above them.
Their high-flying opponents were certainly a tough test to kick-off 2015.
The situation was made even harder because St Francis had their final two league games of 2014 cancelled by their opponents.
This meant it had been a very long break since they had any match practice.
Midhurst clocked their first points shortly after kick-off with a penalty kick when the Saints where penalised at the breakdown.
This was shortly followed by a converted try which gave Midhurst a healthy lead.
In typical Saints fashion they came back fighting in the second half with captain Tom Bruce finally breaking through the tough Midhurst defence and scoring what would be the Saints’ only try of the game.
Emon Kershavaz scored the conversion and closed the gap between the teams but a later try and penalty from Midhurst put the game well and truly to bed.
Saints can still be positive after what was a highly entertaining game with a very large crowd who came down to support despite the miserable weather.
Next week the Saints face Hove III and will welcome back star players Antonio Privetara and Gerrar Maya.
If you are thinking of dusting off your boots or giving rugby a go in 2015 then come down and join the Saints at Southgate Playing Fields.
