AN up and coming young event rider, Harriet Upton (15) of Coolham, whose goal is to ride at the 2016 Olympics, took a step nearer when she was selected by British Eventing as a member of the British Under 18 team to compete in France recently.

Harriet, who attends Farlington School and is also a member of Crawley and Horsham Pony Club, was one of a squad of 18 juniors from all over the country, and one of the youngest, to travel to Haras du Pin in Normandy.

She was competing with Jill Cator’s 16-year-old mare, Estella. By stallion Jumbo and out of Just A Hip, Estella is an advanced eventer and Harriet said: “It was a privilege to ride her. We put in an excellent time in the show jumping and she is a true school mistress.”

Harriet was in a section of 130 international riders, both juniors and seniors, and finished an excellent 17th. She was also top junior rider from the South East, third top junior rider overall and beat six of the world’s top riders.
