SEVENTEEN-year-old LucyAnna Westaway from Ewhurst not only fulfilled a lifelong ambition last week by competing at Badminton, the location of British Eventing’s BE100 National Grassroots Championships, but also finished third overall in the championship.
For the second year running the Grassroots Championships have been held in the two days running up to the 4 Star Badminton Horse Trials, with the cross country course running around much of the same ground as the international event, encompassing familiar challenges such as the Badminton Lake and The Quarry.
Last year’s attempt to reach the championships were thwarted when, having successfully completed both provisional and regional qualification rounds, her horse Raindance III had to be withdrawn just ten days before the event with a stress fracture to its foreleg.
Following a long period of rest and gradual return to work the horse surpassed all expectations by returning at the very end of last season to secure a place for this year’s championships.
