There was a ding-dong clash as Haywards Heath Eagles under 14s opened their Sussex League season by beating Shoreham Spartans 85-78.
Eagles started strongly and opened an eight-point lead in the first 19 minutes.
But then five consecutive turnovers cost them dearly as Spartans hit back to lead 35-33 at the end of the first half.
The boot was on the other foot in quarter 3 as Eagles built a slender one point lead to take into the final quarter.
It was then the moment of truth and it looked like Spartans were going to emerge the winners as in the opening six minutes they took a 72-61 lead.
The odds were stacked against Eagles but they rose to the challenge superbly and a 12-0 run took them ahead with two minutes remaining.
They then cashed in with a 12-6 advantage in the final two minutes to complete victory.
Coach Dimitris Korentzelos said: “Congratulations to all the players for offering up such a spectacular game.
“Our spectators must have been left wondering if all basketball matches are quite so fascinating.”
