THE BOGNOR Friday Night Benevolent League’s Sandy Carter Memorial mixed pairs knockout took place at Newtown Social Club.

A total of 32 pairs turned up, just two pairs short of the record and many more than last year.

The first round saw the three-time finalists and two-time summer mixed pairs champions Debbie and Ashley Clements beaten by some special darts from Amie Elson and Micky Rowland.

The only 180 of the knockout came from Mark Sheppard in the first round, partnered by Bridget Derwojed, but they met Elson and Rowland in the second round, and Sheppard and Derwojed were out.

In the quarter-finals Paula Duckett and Dave Owens beat Elson and Rowland; mother and son Bridget and Richard Scott-Ragless defeated Jenna Cattermole and Dave Coupland; Hayley Gatford and Andy Stubbs knock out Julie English and Roger Hackett and Kirsten Redman and Ben Todd lose to Mazz Tupper and Keith Robinson.

Duckett and Owens met the Raglesses in the first semi-final. The Ragless duo kept the lead through the first leg, despite the only ton coming from Duckett. Owens finished off the second leg to make it 1-1.

With ten left Robinson hit the double five with the first dart to give him and Tupper the title of mixed pairs champions.

The last leg saw Duckett and Owens lead for a long time. Richard Ragless had a chance at 53, but his last two darts were too high, giving Owens another shot which he took, taking out the double 14 to get to the final.

The second semi-final saw Gatford and Stubbs against Tupper and Robinson.

Robinson took the first leg with a 68 out-shot, then finished off the second with double eight to secure a place in the final.

The final’s first leg saw Robinson getting a steady start of 60, but Owens started with 81. Tupper and Robinson built a 50-point lead over Duckett and Owens before struggling on their doubles. With 52 left Duckett hit single 12 and slid the last dart in for a double top to take the leg.

In the second leg, Robinson hit two tons and with Tupper scoring 61 and 85 they had an enormous lead. Duckett and Owens dug deep and Duckett left 74, but it was too late.

With ten left Robinson hit the double five with the first dart to give him and Tupper the title of mixed pairs champions.
