Bognor 0 Crawley 39
Sunday saw Crawley travel to Bognor for their opening U17s league fixture.
With the weather clear and a slight costal breeze it was a day for exhibition rugby.
Keen to improve on last week’s away draw, Crawley settled quickly and began to absorb Bognor’s early pressure.
Crawley’s pack worked hard against a well drilled Bognor team, and quick turnover ball allowed Crawley to spread the ball wide with Kristian Dean scoring in the corner against the run of play.
The impetus of the score allowed Crawley to dominate, scrums being won against the head, lineouts and loose play, contested and edged by Crawley seeing Crawley’s Andrew Gardiner adding to the score and Fraser Thompson scoring a further three tries in the first half all before half-time.
The second half started with Bognor coming out fighting, but driving back Crawley in an early scrum was to be their undoing.
The team quickly regrouped and again thwarted Bognor at every attempt.
Two second half tries from Harry Brand and Kristian Dean respectively allowed Crawley to run in comfortable winners and although it was a day for the backs to put their names on the score sheet it was Crawley’s forwards who gave them the platform on which to shine.
The game was only marred by a serious injury to the Bognor winger’s arm, who we all wish a speedy recovery.
