Crawley Boxing Club’s James Verbeeten travelled to Bognor on Saturday to compete in the Sussex round of the National Senior Development championships and came away with a well-earned points victory against local rival Oscar Canitrot from Horsham.
Boxing in the Under 69Kgs division the Maidenbower resident notched up his seventh win from 11 contests with a clever, paced performance that belied his inexperience.
James spent the entire first round sizing up Canitrot, using up very little energy, comfortably taking shots on the arms and gloves all the while stalking his opponent.
He upped his work rate in the second, counter punching the Horsham man with left jabs and hooks from the centre of the ring.
He finished the stanza with four unanswered left hooks to the head.
James wrapped it up in the third and on occasion he threw and landed his right hand to earn the unanimous decision of the judges.
He travels to Kent this weekend to face their Champion in the next round.
Coach Keith Gabriel was pleased with James’ performance and is looking forward to next week’s test, promising that he will try and get James to throw in a right hand or two once in a while!
