CHARLIE LANE produced one of the best performances of his career at the British Indoor Boardercross Championships last month.

Charlie, eight, from Steyning, was up against competitors up to four years older, but that did not prevent him from securing second place.

It was a remarkable performance from Charlie in Manchester, in the under-12 category.

The Steyning Primary School student was only edged out of top spot by a talented individual four years his senior in the final.

Following that fine performance, Charlie has been rewarded with an invite to attend a pre-elite snowboarding team camp later this month.

The call for the youngster is a fantastic achievement as the minimum age requirement is usually 12 years or over.

However, due to the ability and potential he has shown, selectors have allowed him to begin his development programme now.

Speaking of his recent performance in Manchester, Charlie said: “I was shocked to have done so well in the event.

“I feel the youngest when I am competing and I ride with people always older than me.

“I have done competitions with under-16s as well.

“I am happy with competing with older children, bigger than me.”

The youngster has been riding since the age of five and travels to Hemel Hempstead to train once a week.

Charlie has a busy winter schedule as he is expected to compete in both the Scottish National Boardercross and The Brits in Tignes event in France, with both due to take place next year.

With an exciting year ahead, Charlie outlined his aims for the future and said: “I just want to continue to work hard.

“The aim for me one day is to compete in the Winter Olympics at some point in the future.”
