Hassocks joint Phil Wickwar has parised his side’s defence after three consecutive goalless draws in a week.

Arundel, title-chasers Eastbourne Town and Lancing have all drawn a blank against Hassocks and Wickwar has been pleased.

He said: “The defence have been outstanding. At Eastbourne we were down to bare bones as I was third sub and we had two boys who hadn’t played any senior football. And poor Liam Benson played 90 minutes the night before for u21s.”

But Wickwar has said they have been forced to set up defensively after a number of injuries to the attacking line-up.

He said: “Injuries have limited our attacking options. Jonno Melia, Josh Hawkes, Mark Price and Phil Gault are all injured. Gault Hawkes and Melia have got nearly 30 goals between them so they are missed.

“So we have set up not to be beat and see if we can nick a goal, but we just can’t nick a goal.”

Hassocks have a free midweek but travel to Pagham on Saturday and host St Francis Rangers on Easter Monday.

Wickwar said: “It’s a welcome midweek off as big Rowan Wallis had to come off Saturday after just 10 minutess. Hopefully we will get a couple of players back but two games in three days over the weekend will push us to the limit.”

Wickwar added: “Mark Dalgleish and I cannot praise the team ethic enough. All of the lads have been fantastic, not just the back four and goalkeeper. We have to produce our own and youth teamer Jack Wilkins has come in and done really well.”
