Steve Herbert: What Harry Kewell can expect is 100% backing from the fans

So the worst kept secret in football has finally happened, Harold "Harry" Kewell has become the new Crawley Town manager. How appropriate that his name is Harold!

Let's hope he brings as much passion and excitement to the Reds as namesake Matt Harrold does.

For the ex Liverpool and Leeds striker this is thirty eight year old Kewell's first ever managerial job in the world of senior football. Having had a couple of seasons coaching Watford u23s it's fair to say Kewell will be thrown in at the deep end of English League Two football. Just as his predecessor Dermot Drummy was and we all know how that ended up.

What Kewell does come with is a footballing reputation that stretches the whole of the globe. Having appeared in two World Cup final tournaments with Australia and being a Champions League winner with Liverpool are very impressive statistics to have on your playing CV.

Whether that will help Kewell on a wet and windy Tuesday night at Morecambe remains to be seen.

It's fair to say Harry's appointment is not the managerial appointment that the fans were expecting. Having been told only a fortnight ago that the new appointment will be experienced and who knows the local area.

What this appointment has done though is raise the profile of the club tenfold. As I'm sure this Friday's press conference will show.

Where the club have been shrewd here is appointing ex-Newport County boss Warren Feeney as Kewell's number two, who certainly knows this level of football and of whom should be a great help to HK as he takes his managerial bow.

What Kewell can expect is 100% backing from the fans.

Us Crawley fans will get behind the manger from day one. What the fans want to see next season is a football team playing good quality attacking football. We certainly know we have a squad good enough to do this. With the addition of Reds favourite Dannie Bulman, who became Reds first summer signing, excitement is already building for the big kick off on August 5.

If Kewell and Feeney want to win the fans over from day one, then a little bit of arm waving and some touch line passion wouldn't go a miss. Something that was seriously lacking from our managerial duo of last season.

I really hope Kewell succeeds here at Crawley Town, after three disappointing seasons the club and the supporters could certainly do with an exciting campaign again.
