Crawley Down Gatwick suffered their second successive defeat, 2-0 away to their bogey side Tooting & Mitcham at the KNK Stadium on Tuesday night.
Tooting went in front when Sol Pinnock ran through a vacant Anvil defence to set up wide man Ryan Palmer to rifle home the opener.
Pinnock himself then tested Down keeper Kieron Thorp with a series of corners.
The Anvil backline was being sorely tested as Jordan Cheadle’s shot was hacked away, and then Francis Quarm’s shot was charged down only as far as Pinnock who blazed over.
Down went close when an Ash Robinson free-kick was then headed goalward by Chris Breach but keeper Paul Smith tipped over.
Breach saw his header cleared off the line, but thereafter it was all Tooting with only Thorp between them and further goals.
Anvil attacks were few and far between as the home side put them under more pressure and on 57 minutes a Peter Wedgeworth header was punched out only as far as Cheadle who drove home to give the home side a two-goal margin.
Apart from Ash Robinson having a shot charged down and an odd corner, Tooting continued to push forward. More chances were created and missed with regularity as the magnificent Thorp continued to keep them at ba. He brilliantly tipped over a 40 yardd piledriver from Cheadle,
Then finally Thorpflipped Pinnock’s shot over the bar.
