An early goal from Fintan Walsh, then efforts from Leon Dramis and Sam Blundell in the second 45 minutes, helped Lancing to a 3-1 win at The Sportsfield.

Going into the clash fifth from bottom, Golds missed the chance to jump up two places. With second-bottom Arundel the only team in the bottom seven to record a victory, Baker felt it was an opportunity missed for his team.

He said: “I can’t put my finger on why we were so poor. Lancing just seemed to want it more than us and we just did not turn up at all.

“We seemed to play well in fits and starts but that was about as good as it got. It was only our third game of 2017, so having so little match time was a factor I feel. We can have no excuses, though, and I’m taking nothing away from Lancing they fully deserved the three points.”

Lancers' 16-year-old full-back Fintan Walsh fired his side ahead inside ten minutes. A free-flowing move was started by Walsh, who continued his run, then was on hand to slot home after Lewis Finney had a shot saved.

Finney then saw a cross diverted into his own net by a Littlehampton defender just after the half-hour, only for the linesman to flag for offside with a Lancers playing interfering with play.

Lancing started the second just as they did the first, with a goal. This time around debutant Dramis was the man to get it as Lancers opened up a two-goal lead.

Golds found a way back into the game 20 minutes from time following confusion in Lancing’s backline. Stand-in goalkeeper Callum Fidler came to collect a pass, only for Jack Cole to nip in, round the keeper and slot home.

Lancers faced a ten-minute spell of intense pressure before finishing in style. Substitute Sam Blundell then rifled home from ten yards to ensure all three points for Lancing.

Golds travel to Eastbourne Town, in sixth, on Saturday.

LITTLEHAMPTON: Hutchings; Chaplin, D.Hand, McKay, M.Hand; Kempson, Kew, Ashman; Gray, Gaskin, Cole. Subs: Block (Ashman), Goldson (Kew), Farrell (Chaplin), O’Connor, Askew.
