Sussex Women snap up overseas star McGlashan

Sussex Women have moved to snap up New Zealand batsman Sara McGlashan as their overseas player ahead of the forthcoming NatWest Women's County T20 tournament, which they won last season.

McGlashan will join Sussex for three out of the four T20 weekends, before she teams up with the Southern Vipers for the Kia Super League in its inaugural season.

34-year-old McGlashan is a true all-rounder, as a top-order batsman, bowler and wicketkeeper. The versatile McGlashan is the most capped player for New Zealand in ODI cricket, playing in 134 matches, as well as 76 T20 internationals, where she has scored over 1164 runs.

McGlashan comes from an International cricket family, with her older brother, Peter McGlashan, having also represented New Zealand.

The signing of McGlashan will help strengthen the Sussex batting line-up as they are likely to be missing four key players for the T20 tournament. Georgia Adams is currently sidelined through injury, Sarah Taylor is taking a break from cricket and both Georgia Elwiss and Danielle Wyatt are likely to be on international duty for England.

McGlashan will join up with Sussex on Sunday 3rd July when Sussex will face Kent at Arundel Castle, which means she will miss the first round of games between Middlesex and Yorkshire on the previous Sunday.

However, she will be available for the Kent fixture, the games against Warwickshire and Lancashire on Sunday 17th July, and the matches with Nottinghamshire and Berkshire, which take place at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove on Sunday 24th July.

Sussex’s Director of Women’s Cricket Charlotte Burton said, “We are looking forward to having a highly experienced and quality player such as Sara join Sussex for our T20 campaign. Our aim is retain the T20 trophy this year, and with Sara’s experience she will only strengthen our squad, in particular in the batting department where we will be missing a few players for a couple of the games.

“It is great we have this link with the Southern Vipers, which has allowed us to obtain Sara for our matches before she joins them at the end of July for the new Kia Super League. Her first match will be a highly contested affair as she will go head to head with her international captain Suzie Bates who is playing for Kent.”
