WHEN it comes to golfing rivalry at the inaugural People's Open Golf Tournament final at Royal Birkdale on August 21, it doesn't get much keener than a mother and son striving for glory.
Walking in the footsteps of Open Champion Padraig Harrington will be Carl Barnett, a 5 handicap golfer, and his 46-year-old mum, Sandy, who plays off 24.

Whoever edges ahead could earn bragging rights that could take them right through to next year's tournament at Turnberry.

Carl (21), a telephone systems engineer from Horsham, went into the tournament as part of his mother's birthday present to him.
