Threat to board

THE government has decided to abolish the Agricultural Wages Board.

Amongst other things the Board sets pay bands for workers of various levels of skill within agriculture and horticulture.

Also if a worker falls ill for any length of time the Board has a scheme to top up Statutory Sick Pay with a half day’s pay for each day of illness.

Under new arrangements the only guaranteed wage will be the National Minimum Wage and, if your employer does not have a sick pay scheme, the only income in times of prolonged illness will be SSP, currently £81.06 per week.

Now is the time to write to your MP.

They do take notice of letters from constituents, particularly if they are from people who voted them into power.

There may yet be time to prevent the Board from being abolished.
