IN these austere times, when villages are especially suffering with the closure of shops, pubs and post offices.
On a visit to West Dean gardens and village, I was pleasantly surprised to see the village shop has re-opened, and on walking up to the church, the vernacular flint wall was being repaired.
Quite exceptional work, as many new works and repairs are at the best poor, and at worst lamentable.
A good day, good weather and certain things to take heart from.
