LETTER: Third try on unsuitable site

I have been reading with interest the comments on Horsham Football Club's '˜third and final planning application for a new home'.

HFC are once again trying to get planning permission to develop an area of the golf course at Horsham Golf and Fitness in Denne Park. This is fundamentally the same application that was refused by Horsham District Council in January 2015.

The reasons for this refusal can be found on the HDC Planning website and make very interesting reading. The new application has done absolutely nothing to overcome the four reasons for refusal in 2015.

A huge concern at the time, and one that gained over 250 signatures on a petition (Change.org - Improve Pedestrian Safety on Worthing Road), reflected the very real danger posed to pedestrian and cyclist safety on Worthing Road. This unlit single carriageway has no continuous pavement from Horsham to the proposed site.

What pavement exists is the width of one person. Buses and other large vehicles have to slow down to safely pass pedestrians if there is another vehicle coming towards them. I know - I’ve nearly been clipped a couple of times. You have to cross Worthing Road at the top of a blind summit to continue walking on the narrow pavement on the other side of the road.

Walking from Southwater to the proposed site you will be taking your life in your hands. Anyone fancy a sprint across the A24? The body that decides this planning application MUST MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT to walk to and from the site, in daylight and at night-time to assess the safety of this proposal. You all have a duty of care to the users.

Horsham Football Club should have a new home. It should have a sustainable home that will allow it to grow in an easily accessible location. Why oh why are the management of Horsham Football Club still running around in circles, coming back for a third try in a plainly unsuitable location?
