Letter: Gatwick Airport is not at full capacity

I read with interest the letter in the Observer (October2) ‘Embrace Future’ by Max and Angela Brooks-Usher with interest, until I got to the line, ‘we have always been in favour of a second runway even though we will loose our home’.

OK ‘they live in Lowfield Heath and if the second runway and don’t forget the third terminal go ahead they will be nicely compensated for the loss of their home and will possibly move away from the Crawley area and Gatwick. Gatwick is not yet operating to its full capacity and won’t be for several years to come. Stansted now owned by Manchester Airport is operating at around fifty per cent of capacity, it has very good rail and road infrastructure and could easily cope with any major increase in air traffic in the south east for many years to come. I too was at the full council meeting where this issue was discussed and I fully agree with the comment by Councillor Brenda Smith when she said that Gatwick is here because of Crawley, and crawley is not here because of Gatwick.
