Volunteers, members, staff and trustees of the Worthing Society of the Blind stood on South Street Square handing out balloons, magnifiers and leaflets to passing members of the public as part of the charity’s active recruitment campaign to increase membership.

With the help of the newly elected Mayor, Cllr Sean MacDonald, there was a good interest in the services of this local charity, which has been serving the partially sighted and blind of Worthing for over 100 years.

Based at its centre in Rowlands Road, Worthing, the charity have two minibuses and a small team of staff supported by the volunteers. Most days there are organised activities for the members, who are required to have a vision impairment to qualify for free membership.

Barry Ward, chairman of the Trustees, said: “We are looking to increase our membership which has started to decline over the past few years, so we need to actively raise the profile of the Society in Worthing.”

Frances Pritchard, centre manager, said: “We support a lot of members who have partial sight who have age related sight loss issues.”

Tina Hemsley, who is a volunteer and Trustee, said: “Being there for the members is fantastic. They greatly appreciate the support from me and the other volunteers and multiple activities that are organised for them.”

Millie Smith, a long standing member, said: “Membership of this friendly society has been great. I made a lot of new friends, who being in the same situation as me, has given me strength to cope with a deteriorating sight loss.”
