Mr Slatorm, the bandmaster, said: “The Salvation Army is working with the UNHCR [The UN Refugee Agency] and regularly serves between 200 and 300 needy refugees each day in its church building.

“In contrast to the chaotic scenes with refuges in the city during the summer, I was most impressed with the level of organisation which they have now developed.”

There are currently about 160,000 refugees in various camps throughout the country.

The Athens Corps of the Salvation Army and a group of dedicated volunteers work with the refugees in Athens supplying milk to mothers and children, winter clothing, food parcels, plus an Adopt a Family Programme.
