Workshop inspires Felpham Community College students

The workshop, which was run by ‘John Young Media’ and themed around ‘How News Works’, was open to Year Nine students.
The day focused on career aspirations and ambitions and involved the students demonstrating teamwork, presentation and role play.

Hide AdThe day also investigated the impact of media on young people and how news and TV news is produced.
John Young has been television and radio journalist for 26 years. His media company now aims to pass on his knowledge and experience to both businesses and schools through running aspirational and adrenaline filled workshops.
Paul Darbyshire, curriculum Leader for business and vocational studies, said: “One of our main aims at FCC is to teach students life skills as well as the National Curriculum. This workshop was fantastic and gave students an excellent opportunity to learn presentation, journalist and employment skills as well as reflecting on their ambitions and aspirations. They practised team work and delegation, and experienced the ‘buzz’ you get when you achieve a task to a tight deadline. The atmosphere was great, the students worked incredibly hard and John commented really positively on the level of work they produced.”
Jamie Denman, a Year Nine student who attended the workshop, said: “The day was really enjoyable and it was good to do something different. We worked in teams to create short news broadcasts. Working to deadlines made it fun and motivating, and Mr Young was really motivational getting us to do our best. I want to do ICT and business in my options so today was really useful. I think it helped everyone as we were skills you can use in all areas, such as presentation and being prepared for anything.”
